What inspired you to write your memoir?

My biggest inspiration for writing my memoir came from my friends and family, as well as my desire to share my story and inspire others. I wanted my book to stand out from other chess books by including not just my journey to becoming a great chess player and master, but also the personal struggles I faced along the way. My experiences, including multiple surgeries, shaped who I am today, and I felt it was important to share them in the hope that my story could impact and inspire everyone who reads it.

How did writing your book impact you emotionally?

Revisiting my past was an emotional journey, but it ultimately helped me release feelings I had kept bottled up for a long time. Writing about my experiences, like in Chapter 2 when I discuss my spinal fusion surgery and the mental struggles I faced, was like reliving a war—not just in my body but also in my mind. However, by putting my story on paper, I was able to let go of a lot of the pain I carried. My biggest hope is that my experiences can help others with the same disability, showing them that they are not alone. If I can help even one person through my story, then I’ve done my job.

A moment that shaped my journey

One of the most defining moments in my journey was my second spine surgery. It taught me that life can change in an instant, and the nerve pain I endured gave me a new perspective on life. I learned to appreciate the people around me more and to value every moment. That surgery didn’t just make me stronger physically—it also made me a stronger individual and a better chess player.

What do you hope readers will gain from your book?

I hope readers will see the strength I’ve gained through my experiences and be inspired by my journey. More than anything, I want my story to touch people’s lives, not just through chess but in many different ways. I also hope that my insights into the game will help improve their chess skills and strategy. My memoir is about resilience, passion, and growth, and I want every reader to walk away feeling empowered.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

The biggest challenge I faced was writing Chapter 2. Because I have PTSD, I had to work through painful memories and block out some of the traumatic visions that came with them in order to fully write that chapter. It was also nerve-wracking to know that I was putting my life story out there for everyone to read. But in the end, I knew it was worth it if my story could help others.

What advice would you give to someone writing a memoir?

Take it one day at a time, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Writing a memoir isn’t about how many books you sell—it’s about how many lives you impact. Stay true to your story, be honest with yourself, and remember that your experiences have the power to inspire others.
